WHAT IS ELDT?
ELDT stands for Entry Level Driver Training, which is a program that was established by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) to improve the safety of new truck drivers. Under the ELDT program, truck driving schools must meet certain requirements in order to be eligible to train and certify new drivers.
The specific requirements for truck driving schools under the ELDT program include:
Curriculum: Truck driving schools must have a curriculum that covers the knowledge and skills that are necessary for new drivers to be safe and successful on the road. The curriculum must include at least 30 hours of classroom instruction and 10 hours of driving practice.
Instructor qualifications: Truck driving schools must have instructors who are qualified to teach the ELDT curriculum. This includes having at least three years of driving experience, as well as the necessary knowledge and skills to teach the curriculum.
Equipment: Truck driving schools must have equipment that is suitable for training new drivers, including trucks and trailers that are representative of those that new drivers will encounter on the road.
Recordkeeping: Truck driving schools must maintain records of the training they provide to new drivers, including the curriculum, instructor qualifications, and training materials.
By meeting these requirements, truck driving schools can help ensure that new drivers receive the training and support they need to become safe and successful on the road. It is important for truck driving schools to follow the ELDT requirements in order to maintain their eligibility to train and certify new drivers.
